Derby Day!

I was stuck in travel hell yesterday, and missed watching it live for the first time in decades. It’s a family tradition that everyone picks a horse the morning of the race. And what a race it was… won by a flared nostril!

  1. It was a magnificent race. As a Catholic, I felt compelled to go with “Honor Marie”.

The juleps, made with Woodford Reserve, with souvenir cup at the watch event I attended were also delightful.

  2. I was excited that Mystik Dan’s jockey Brian Hernandez Jr. and trainer Kenny McPeek were the same jockey and trainer whose filly won the Oaks (Thorpedo Anna). Sierra Leone almost made it, just too much traffic forcing him to go wide. You could tell Mystik Dan had a shot once he moved to the rail during the turn; he just had to get a break in traffic to pull ahead. I don’t know whether they will put Mystik Dan in the Preakness since there will be rested Baffert horses likely entered.
    Triple Crown Season!!

    1. I think they definitely run Mystik Dan in the Preakness due to the shorter track. I doubt he can compete at Belmont.
