NAC’s Crucial Role in Preventing and Treating COVID-19

Highly, highly recommended. I believe NAC has helped me tremendously with inflammation against my life-long overactive immune system, and lessened the severity of my cytokine storm post-delta. Of course, I am taking it in combination with other things, so it might not be 100% the NAC, but I’m pretty sure it is a huge part of it. Thanks, Nurse Claire. Here is Dr. Mercola:

N-acetylcysteine (NAC) has a long history of use to help prevent liver damage, and more recently as a treatment for flu viruses. Now researchers have discovered its lifesaving value for COVID-19.

N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is a precursor to reduced glutathione, which appears to play a crucial role in COVID-19. According to an April 2020 literature analysis, glutathione deficiency may be associated with COVID-19 severity, leading the author to conclude that NAC may be useful both for its prevention and treatment.

NAC has a long history of use as a first-aid remedy for acetaminophen poisoning. It neutralizes the toxic effects of the drug by recharging glutathione, thereby preventing liver damage. But the idea that NAC can also be helpful against viral infections is not new. Previous studies have found it reduces viral replication of certain viruses, including the influenza virus.

In one such study, the number needed to treat (NNT) was 0.5, which means for every two people treated with NAC, one will be protected against symptomatic influenza. That’s significantly better than influenza vaccines, which have an NNV (number needed to vaccinate) of 71, meaning 71 people must be vaccinated to prevent a single case of confirmed influenza. It’s even better than vitamin D, which has an NNT of 33.

In the MedCram lecture above, pulmonologist Dr. Roger Seheult reviews the latest medical literature on NAC for COVID-19, starting with a paper published in the October 2020 issue of Clinical Immunology titled “Therapeutic Blockade of Inflammation in Severe COVID-19 Infection With Intravenous N-acetylcysteine.”

Previous research has shown NAC inhibits the expression of proinflammatory cytokines in cells infected with highly pathogenic H5N1 influenza virus. Proinflammatory cytokines also play a crucial role in COVID-19 severity…

  1. Does anyone have an anecdotal story of this helping post covid? I have residual symptoms a year later and am wondering if taking an ongoing oral dose of NAC from Thorne Inc. would help.

    1. Valerie, I can speak only for my own experience, but I did not regain my sense of smell and sense of taste until taking NAC (and other supplements) for about a week or so. I had COVID almost a year ago (2/21), the OG strain. Before contracting COVID, I had been working a ridiculous amount with almost no rest and had been eating junk food. It was my fault because as a long distance runner I knew better, but basically I had been eating junk and not supplementing since March 2020. After about a year of this, my immunity must have broken down because I caught COVID. Recovery took a long time, and I did not change my unhealthy eating after becoming well enough to return to work. But everything tasted off and I couldn’t smell much of anything.
It wasn’t until I heard Nurse Claire mention NAC that I realized supplements and healthy eating could be my path out of what they call long COVID. Because I was (and still am) taking so much other stuff as well, I can’t guarantee the NAC caused me to regain my energy and sense of taste. Was it the NAC or the pine needle tea or the Quercetin or the l-Carnitine or the….you get the idea.
NAC must be effective though or Amazon would not have pulled it. They are draconian when it comes to enforcement of COVIDism.

  2. something IMPORTANT to remember….if you do supplement with NAC, be sure to drink PLENTY of water to lessen chance of renal cysteine stones forming….not a terribly common occurrence, but it can happen, and is wildly ‘unpleasant’.

    1. Thank you Susan, I have taken NAC for a long time, even before COVID, and I did not know that. Very good advice!

  3. Very glad to hear that works for you you.
In a normal world, line that we’ve always known until a few years ago, it was assumed you could find and use any health path you pleased in pursuit of personal health.
Now? It seems increasingly the nasty nosies who think they have the right to direct intimate health choices for others. So it’s nice to hear you found your own path – with help (of course) from friends.
Side note: a funny little prophetic short film from Australia, circa 2019 – pre lockdowns, about life in “Utopia” – where good choices are compulsory. 15 minute film, but well worth your time.

  4. Not as far fetched as I would have thought it to be five years ago. His sister-in-law is my hero! Love the last shot with the tan line.

    1. gneisslady: The best part of the last scene is the irony: she’s finally free after being imprisoned in a jail with walls 100′ high … because she regained autonomy over her own soul when she chose non-compliance over submission to tyranny.
The turning point point? An act of love. The brother told her, as she betrayed him good and hard, that he (genuinely) forgave her. The act of sacrificial love changed her mind (heart), changed her course, put her in jail and it was there she finally got her life back.
She was freer inside than out. The real jail was outside.
      It’s actually quite profound.

  5. My anecdote:
I had Covid late November 2021. Cough, nausea, impaired sleep, cough, loss of smell. NAC, weirdly, was the only thing that worked for the nausea, and it worked amazingly well . Also, weirdly, post COVID I became much more EMF field sensitive. I had to start wearing shielded clothing in the car driving past all the new data towers, sleep away from all WiFi/devices, and had to turn all devices to airplane mode in the car and if I am not using them. NAC has helped with this issue too. I still take NAC twice a day and as long as I am careful with my devices I feel normal. If I don’t I get pain and increased EMF sensitivity. My brain fog at this point seems to be almost 100% EMF sensitivity. My bed was too close to a wall near the neighbors’ WIFI and I had to change the layout.
I am an MD, but my observations are exactly as valuable as anyone else’s about their own condition. My advice is when you experiment try to change one thing at a time within an otherwise regular schedule.
I take the Thorne NAC because it was what I could find. It worked for me.
