Just heard some Trump apologists say that the Department of Education and USAID were created by executive order.
USAID was created due to the Foreign Assistance Act, an act passed by Congress so the president could give money appropriated for it to other countries. The EO merely named the organization.
The Department of Education was created due the Department of Education Organization Act of 1979.
What does this mean? It means that EOs are functionally worthless.
More smoke and mirrors. President Orange today said that gutting the DOE is justified because the US spends more per pupil than any other country and is 40th in education. His implication is that this is the responsiblity of the Department of Education. In fact, US public schools are funded by state and local taxes.
The responsibilities of this department oversee college loans, instruction at US military bases, making recommendations to the states, etc. So the Dept of Ed has zero to do with our crappy pubic schools.
