United Airlines’ CEO wants to make Covid-19 vaccines mandatory for employees and is encouraging other companies do the same.
“The worst thing that I believe I will ever do in my career is the letters that I have written to the surviving family members of coworkers that we have lost to the coronavirus,” CEO Scott Kirby said at an employee town hall Thursday, a transcript of which was reviewed by CNBC. “And so, for me, because I have confidence in the safety of the vaccine – and I recognize it’s controversial – I think the right thing to do is for United Airlines, and for other companies, to require the vaccines and to make them mandatory.”
“I don’t think United will get away with and can realistically be the only company that requires vaccines and makes them mandatory,” he said. “We need some others. We need some others to show leadership. Particularly in the healthcare industry.”

Facebook removed more than 78,000 profiles on both Facebook and Instagram, saying they had posted QAnon content and content related to “militarized social movements” since August 2020.
“We continue to strengthen our enforcement by identifying additional militarized social movements, new terms associated with QAnon and how people attempt to skirt our detection, including focusing more on Facebook profiles used to organize and promote these movements and groups on our platform,” Facebook said in an update on Jan. 19.
The company added that “these groups are constantly working to avoid our enforcement and we’ll continue to study how they evolve in order to keep people safe.”

The video below is Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D minor, long a favorite piece of mine. Written in the early 1700s (the date is disputed, as is its attribution to Bach), it was first popularized by Mendelssohn in the 19th Century, and was made famous in the Disney movie Fantasia in 1940. It is classified as abstract classical music. In other words, it isn’t sacred… it doesn’t mean anything, so to speak. So although it doesn’t have the same effect on the listener as might some of the more beautiful Mass settings, it’s still pretty cool.
Sidebar, there is a Philly connection here. Disney (warts and all) was a casual friend of Leopold Stokowski, long time Conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra. The two had been planning a project where the music would be as important as the visuals. Originally planned as a short, it evolved into a full-length string of pieces, with music quality never-before heard on a recording. You see, Fantasia was the first movie ever released in stereo. This meant theaters had to install additional speakers and equipment to be eligible to show the movie; the surround sound experience of today traces directly back to this. The soundtrack was recorded at the Philadelphia Academy of Music, by the Philadelphia Orchestra, under the direction of Stokowski in April-May 1939. Stokowski worked with Disney’s engineers to place 33 microphones in the orchestra, feeding into eight distinct audio channels. Nothing like this had ever been done before. In terms of sound quality, the acoustical mathematics of a venue make all the difference in the world. I can personally attest to the Stendahl-inducing capabilities of the Academy of Music. Sadly, the Orchestra abandoned this venue for the wretched Kimmel Center twenty years ago. But if you ever get the chance to hear a professional orchestra in a top notch venue, you absolutely should go, even if you know nothing of classical music. God built you for the experience.
Okay, back to the video. I like this version because the audio is excellent, of course, but also the visuals show the organist at work the entire time. Check out the coordination, concentration, effortless movement between the manuals while never taking his eyes off the sheet. It pains me that I’m not coordinated enough to juggle three tennis balls, let alone what this cat is up to.
The Toccata portion lasts for 2:30 and ends with a pedal solo and a D minor cord with a shot of the pipes. Then comes the Fugue, which builds into a four voice romp at 5:00 with footwork on point.

On November 3rd, 2020, most of us went to bed fairly confident that everything was going well, perhaps even better than planned. The Florida landslide was astonishing, and it bode very well for the nation. On Wednesday morning, as Trump’s big lead had vanished overnight in most of the swing states, I heard three different commentators on three different fake news networks utter nearly identical narratives to describe was occurring. It seemed strange to me, being no spring chicken, that I had never heard of such a thing. Yet every commentator and “election expert” was spouting this in strikingly similar terms, as if reading from a script. It’s settled election science! Moreover, there is zero chance this can be an established fact, because this is the first time a general election has been contested largely through mail-in ballots due to corona… which puts corona under even more scrutiny.

While the forces of decency, democracy and good government prevailed in this impeachment vote, we should ask what gain this battle has brought. A Senate debate will distract that body at a time when a new president critically needs it to confirm his Cabinet, and to approve a funding package to accelerate vaccinations and Covid-19 relief. Impeachment likely persuaded nobody; on all things Trumpian, it seems, virtually no American appears persuadable.
What is needed, rather, is criminal prosecution.
To deter the next unhinged narcissist from using the presidency to undermine the electoral process, a jury must convict Trump of his crimes. Trump previously suffered impeachment for deploying unlawful means to remain in power — using his office to leverage Ukraine to investigate then-Democratic opponent Joe Biden’s family. That impeachment did not deter Trump from abusing his power again, nor should we believe that this one will deter anyone else. A criminal conviction will.
By imposing a personal and direct punishment upon Trump, criminal prosecution will force future leaders to think twice about threatening that essential precondition of any functional republic: the peaceful transfer of power. It will unequivocally repudiate, once and for all, the Nixonian doctrine that “when the president does it … that means it’s not illegal.” If democracy depends on the “consent of the losers,” as some have put it, then the loser’s consent must be mandatory, and enforced by a punitive sanction. We cannot satisfy ourselves with the prosecution of the pelt-wearing members of the mob. FBI investigating if Capitol rioter stole Nancy Pelosi’s laptop to sell to Russia
The feds are investigating whether a Pennsylvania woman who was seen on video taking part in the US Capitol riots stole a laptop or hard drive from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office and planned to sell it to the Russians, officials said.
The FBI is seeking Riley June Williams on charges including entering a restricted building, disrupting the orderly conduct of government and engaging in disorderly or disruptive conduct. A witness described as a former romantic partner of Williams claimed to have seen footage of her “taking a laptop computer or hard drive from Speaker Pelosi’s office.”
“[Witness 1] stated that WILLIAMS intended to send the computer device to a friend in Russia, who then planned to sell the device to SVR, Russia’s foreign intelligence service,” an agent said. “According to [Witness 1], the transfer of the computer device to Russia fell through for unknown reasons and WILLIAMS still has the computer device or destroyed it,” according to the affidavit, which includes a link to a documentary produced by London-based ITV News.
A woman identified as Williams — wearing glasses, a green shirt and brown trench coat and carrying a bag over her shoulder — can be seen yelling “Upstairs, upstairs, upstairs,” pushing people toward Pelosi’s office, according to NPR.
